Hot Topics:

  • Oscar Pistorious Sentenced: Oscar Pistorious was sentenced to 5 years for shooting his girlfriend. Nicolle said this is an example of cold-blooded murder and she thinks he got away with murder. She identified this as an example of how women are most at risk from the men that they live with. Rosie O agreed and recommended the HBO documentary Private Violence which explores that very topic. She was also unsure the sentence fit the crime. Rosie P clarified that Oscar was charged with “unintentionally murdering” his girlfriend. Nicolle said it didn’t feel right to her that he should get away with murder. To Whoopi, this type of event seems to happen a lot and she has read that pregnant women, particularly those that are 8 months pregnant, are most at risk when it comes to domestic violence. Rosie P discussed how she likes television shows like Investigation Discovery about crime investigations because they break down how the murders happen, which Nicolle pointed out always ends up the same: The guy murders his wife.
  • Monica Lewinsky Internet Pioneer: In a recent speech, Monica Lewinsky claims to be the first person to have their reputation completely destroyed worldwide via the internet. Nicolle thought her speech was brave. She said Lewinsky was moved by the story of the Rutgers student (Tyler Clementi) who killed himself after being bullied via the internet. She saw a role for herself in speaking out for victims of internet bullying. Nicolle believes she was bullied by the political system. Rosie P said in Great Britain if you are caught trolling (harassing someone) via the internet you can be jailed for up to two years. She commented on the violence against women over the internet and referred to it as “brutal.” Rosie O (who we all know is very active on social media) said she actually loves Monica Lewinsky. She was once at an event in 2002 and the Secret Service approached and told her that Bill Clinton wanted to speak to her. Rosie O declined to speak to him. She then went on stage and talked about how Lewinsky was walking around with a scarlet letter “A” on her chest while he was laughing his way through life without a care in the world. Rosie O didn’t think it was fair. Lewinsky wrote Rosie O a letter and said she was the first public figure to stand up for her. Rosie O thinks she is an amazing woman and said if Clinton had been in a corporation, he would have been prosecuted and ousted for his actions. Rosie P said women should stand behind her because no one deserves to be bullied. Nicolle said she was “slut shamed” because she had sex with Clinton. Rosie O pointed out that she was single and he was the one who was married and broke his vows. Whoopi said there were no heroes in this story, everyone was at fault, but just because someone makes a mistake does not mean they should wear a scarlet letter for their entire lives. Nicolle said if Hillary Clinton runs for President, this issue will surely come up, which is fascinating to her.

Guests:

Valerie Plame: The former CIA operative who was outed in the Bush administration joined the ladies of The View for a discussion about her former career. Plame described her former career as a covert CIA officer. She said it was her job to spot, develop and to recruit foreign nationals in order to provide critical intelligence. Her expertise was in nuclear counter-proliferation which meant trying to prevent bad people from getting their hands on nuclear weapons. The ladies of The View discussed the recent threat of ISIS and she said it was a strategic surprise when ISIS started taking territory in Iraq. She said they are not Islamic and do not conform to the teachings of the Koran. She said they are not a state, but a “menace.” Plame said the mere thought that they could acquire a nuclear weapon would be catastrophic. Rosie O wanted to know if the character Carrie on the television series Homeland is an accurate portrayal of her former job. Plame said a woman who suffers from bipolar disorder would not be permitted to have a job in the CIA but she thinks the show is great TV. She says the CIA looks for people who are deeply resilient with great interpersonal skills which Carrie doesn’t have. Rosie P liked Valerie’s new book, Burned, because she really “tells it like it is.” Rosie O asked how Plame was recruited, but she can’t say publically. Rosie O joked and asked if it had anything to do with Mandy Patinkin. Whoopi wanted to know if she misses her old job, and Plame said that she does. She said she was proud to serve her country, loved what she did and never really wanted to be publicly known.

More Hot Topics:

  • Texas Teacher Busted: A 24 year old female Texas teacher was busted for having an affair with a 17 year old student. After she sent him a naked selfie he showed it around to all his friends. When the teacher found out she asked the school to investigate! The story made Rosie P laugh out loud and say, “Honey, what is your problem?!” All the ladies had a laugh at the stupidity.
  • Stem Cell Success: Stem cell therapy is now helping a paralyzed man to walk. Whoopi wanted to know how people could still have a problem with stem cell research after seeing success like this. Nicolle explained how Bush stopped federal dollars from supporting it, but Obama has reversed the decision. Rosie P understood that people still have an issue with this research but also couldn’t argue with success like that. Rosie O wished that Christopher Reeve had lived to see this day and reflected on a friend of hers, Francesco Clark.   Francesco tragically dove into the wrong end of the swimming pool and was paralyzed from the arms down. He is now benefiting from the stem cell research and the Christopher Reeve Foundation and she thought many people are going to be helped by the research. Whoopi agreed and is thrilled that it is happening.
  • RIP Oscar De La Renta: The ladies briefly gave tribute to Oscar De La Renta who died at the age of 82. Mr. De La Renta was a friend of the show and even dressed the first lady of ABC, Ms. Barbara Walters. The ladies expressed their condolences to his friends and family.
  • Sidebar: Nicolle plugged Birds Eye Frozen Broccoli Florets, Marie Calendar’s Frozen Chicken Pot Pie, and Green Giant’s Frozen Corn and Black Beans with Brown Rice (in a southwestern style sauce) and talked about how frozen meals help food last longer and will save time and money for your family.

Nicolle: “It sure feels like a lot of men get away with murdering their girlfriends and wives in cold blood.”

Whoopi: “Just because people make mistakes doesn’t mean we put them in the scarlet letter forever.”

Rosie P: “The violence against women on the internet is insane. It’s brutal.”

Hot Topics:

  • Weekend Wrap Up: The ladies began the show discussing their weekends. Rosie P was in Maine filming a movie. While she was able to watch the season finale of The Knick, one of her favorite shows on Cinemax, she couldn’t get the big GGG fight on HBO. Rosie O and her son Blake, helped her out by texting her updates after every round! She also said she got a lot of updates from her fellow boxing friends on Twitter.   Rosie O took her son to the movies this past Saturday, which they do every weekend, and they saw the film Fury starring Brad Pitt.   Rosie O loved the film and talked about how great it was to see Pitt play a “fatherly” role in the film. Nicolle was happy to come back to work this morning! She explained how her 2.5 year old son Liam is obsessed with construction vehicles so her husband rented an excavator to move some boulders around on their property. Nicolle was happy for her son and husband but felt pretty bored with the whole idea and teased her husband about how things would be different if they had a daughter. Rosie O gave her a little “motherly advice” and suggested next time they plan a boys day that she call a friend and go to the mall instead. Rosie O said her wife Michelle and Michelle’s mom Gayla were in today’s audience. She said their baby Dakota was backstage and she would bring her out during the commercial breaks to meet the audience.

  • Shameful Shia: Shia LaBeouf is now claiming that “method acting,” the way he prepares for a role, got him fired from his first Broadway role. Rosie O highly doubted this excuse and thinks Shia most likely had a nervous breakdown. She said it’s hard to be famous sometimes in America. She also thinks perhaps he has been “self-medicating” a mental illness with drugs and alcohol. Nicolle wondered if it’s possible he’s just a tool. She also wondered if you’re screwed for life if you start your career out on Disney. Whoopi reminded Nicolle that THEY are all on Disney (meaning ABC).  Rosie P reminded the ladies that Brando was a “method actor,” but never committed a crime because of it. Whoopi didn’t believe the excuse either and said one can’t just go to a theater and “pee on other people’s art” while people are trying to work. She told Shia to “get it together.”
  • Catholic Cardinals Backtrack On Gay Welcome: Pope Francis recently made statements accepting the gay community into the Catholic church, but conservative cardinals removed from the language rejecting the landmark wording that would soften the church’s stance toward homosexuality. Rosie O compared it to the President when he makes a decision and the Congress overrules it though, of course, she wished they would have accepted the wishes of the Pope. Nicolle loved the message the Pope was sending to one of his Cardinals, an outspoken critic of the Pope, by demoting him and sending him to a ceremonial post in Malta. She’s not Catholic, but she too likes this Pope. Rosie P said it’s hard for her to voice her opinion on a religion that she no longer practices, but she said people should know all the Pope was trying to say was that we should not judge others and we should be more accepting and inviting to gay people. Rosie O was also raised Catholic, although she’s currently non-practicing. She said when she was growing up everything the Pope said was the rule and she wondered why this isn’t the case today. Whoopi likes the new Pope and she likes it anytime organized religion goes back to the heart of what it’s supposed to be about.
  • Go Serena Go: Serena Williams is speaking out against the Russian Tennis Federation President for referring to her sister and her as “The Williams Brothers” amongst other insults. Serena called his comments “sexist,” “racist” and a form of “bullying.” Rosie P said the Williams sisters changed tennis from an all-white, elite organization thereby opening up the game to a broader audience. She said, “They [the Williams sisters] should be given the respect they are due.” Rosie O said the sisters are strong, beautiful, powerful, talented women and should be treated as such. Nicolle loves to see women stand up against bullies, and she loved that Serena spoke out. She said both Serena and her sister are role models who give back tremendously to their community. Whoopi simply stated that the comments “really pissed her off.”
  • Must Have Mondays: Starting next Monday, The View will be having “Must Have Mondays” where they will be partnering with popular vendors on the show to sell items at 60-80% off the retail price.  Watch for that next Monday (10/27)!
  • Meth Lab Toys: A Florida mom has launched a petition against Toys R Us for carrying Breaking Bad action figures.   The toys are aimed for people over the age of 15, but parents are calling for the toy store to pull the figures from the shelves. Rosie O said people like her and other “Comic-Con nerds” love collecting these types of figures. She admitted to owning every single Game of Thrones figure. Both Whoopi and Rosie O understood the market for these types of collectibles and wanted a set for themselves!
  • To Label or Not To Label: According to a recent study from Johns Hopkins University, teens were less likely to buy sugary drinks after seeing signs that said how far they would have to walk to burn off the calories or how their faces will age from drinking the sugary drink. The doctors are suggesting warning labels for high calorie drinks like soda.  Rosie O was a big fan of the idea. She said obesity is killing America and anything we can do to stem that problem is of benefit. Nicolle agreed and thinks people, especially teens, might choose their drinks differently if they knew the facts. Whoopi wasn’t so sure. She doesn’t think people who aren’t obese should have to have such a label on their soda. She thinks they should just be able to enjoy a Coke if they choose to do so. She said there are harmful things everywhere and if we’re going to label some unhealthy things we need to label everything that is unhealthy. She asked if we should now label shot glasses of alcohol with the words “don’t drive.” Rosie P said teens and kids aren’t going into bars and this movement is meant to educate them. Nicolle said “information is power” and she’s a fan of labeling everything. Whoopi still thought grownups need to take responsibility for what they choose to drink. Rosie O agreed but said that companies need to take responsibility for selling products that can kill you. She said her generation grew up thinking smoking was glamorous, but that perception changed, and kids today have a different opinion about smoking. She said people have the power to change their way of thinking when it comes to soda, if they can change society’s perception of it.  Whoopi said that change in society’s perception has made it so smokers have nowhere to smoke freely and no affordable help if they want to quit.

Guests:

Scott Foley: Scandal star Scott Foley joined the panel for a steamy discussion about his role on the hit television show!   Scott and the ladies discussed how his wife feels about the lovemaking scenes and how she even gives him tips on the make-out scenes when they watch the show together! Nicolle asked Scott if he’s ever afraid his character might be in danger and he said he is. He said in television, you’re never safe, and every time he reads one of the scripts at a table reading, he’s terrified. Scott just recently sold a sitcom to ABC and the magnificent Shonda Rhimes has signed on to be the Executive Producer on the project! He spoke with the ladies about what it’s like juggling home life, his wife and two children, and his new baby on the way. Nicolle said all her friends in politics and who live in DC, love Scandal and watch it religiously. The ladies discussed which television shows they enjoy binge-watching, which included shows like House of Cards, Orange Is the New Black, The Bridge, Breaking Bad, etc. He said he wasn’t able to binge-watch shows before because his contacts hurt his eyes so much, but when Bausch and Lomb heard about his problem, they invited him to try their BioTrue contact solution. Your can try BioTrue too by visiting BioTrueChallenge.com. Scandal airs on Thursdays at 9pm on ABC.

Clark GreggClark Gregg, who is starring in Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., joined the ladies to discuss his role on the show.  Clark had a small role in Ironman, and they kept expanding the role and adding him to the movies.  He went on to star in the The Avengers.  They chatted about his beautiful wife Jennifer Grey and what it’s like to have his very own action figure!  Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. airs tomorrow night (Tuesdays) on ABC.

Quoteables:

Whoopi: [To the Pope] “Franny, you’re my dog!”
Nicolle:  “I like to see women stand up for themselves against bullies.”
Rosie P: [about boxer GGG] “He is THE rising star in boxing.”
Rosie O:  “Obesity is killing America.”

Hot Topics:

  • American Horror Story Freak Show: Whoopi loves AHS but said the clowning community is not so excited about the way clowns are portrayed. Rosie O agreed and called the clown on the show the “John Wayne Gacy Killer Clown.”  Whoopi called him the apex of horror clowns. Nicolle was terrified of mimes as a kid.  Rosie O joked with her and said, “this is great, whenever you say anything Republican I don’t like I’m just going to do this!” as she pretended to mime in the air. Nicolle said she could turn her into a Democrat if she keeps it up!  And then Rosie P told Nicolle she was weird.
  • The Knick on Cinemax is Rosie P’s new favorite show. It’s a show about a 19th century hospital in New York. Rosie O’s favorite  is The Bridge on FX. She thinks it is the greatest show on television and she said the star, Franka Potente, should be nominated for an Emmy or the “Nobel Peace Prize of acting.” Nicolle’s favorite is Homeland. Rosie P asked viewers to live-tweet her updates on a big boxing match on HBO this weekend because she will be in Maine filming again. Nicolle doesn’t really get boxing, but Rosie O knows all about it because of her love for UFC and promised to tweet her during the bout.
  • John Grisham’s Shocking Remarks: Best-selling author John Grisham has raised a lot of eyebrows for recent remarks he’s made regarding child porn. He has since apologized. Rosie O wanted to know if John felt like pedophiles needed a champion and he had to speak on their behalf. She said she was horrified when she read his comments. She accepted his apology but didn’t believe a single “bleeping” thing he said. She flatly stated that men don’t “accidentally stumble” across child pornography and she added, if she were the police she would take a look at his hard-drive today.
  • The Respect Awards are in LA benefit tonight, sponsored by the Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education network whose goal is to wipe out bullying in all forms. If you are interested in seeing their auction items, go to CharityBuzz.com. Whoopi will be at the benefit and said it is a great cause.
  • Inspirational Kids, two students with Down’s syndrome, Semone Adkins and Travjuan “Bubba” Hunterwere, were named homecoming king and queen at their Florida High school.  The ladies LOVED this news.
  • Endorsed By His Wife: Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush’s wife wants him to run for president in 2016. Though in the past she’s been against it, Columba Bush is now “supportive” of the potential run.  Nicolle said this is a good development for the folks who want to see him run because his wife was seen as an obstacle. She sees him as a “great voice in our party,” because he believes in comprehensive immigration; he is measured, and has mainstream views on education. She sees him as an exciting candidate and an intellectual force in the Republican party. Rosie O pointed out that he didn’t want to put his teenagers through a run, but now that they are older, he might be willing. Nicolle agreed and said, the Bushes more than any other family other than the Clinton’s understand how brutal running for president is. Rosie O and Whoopi agreed that neither of them would want to be President, especially after watching what it has done to Obama. Nicolle said “they age by the minute,” but first ladies get better looking! “They endure,” said Nicolle.
  • Viral Photo: The image of the grandmother who requested to visit the beach on her way to hospice brought both Rosies to tears. Rosie O particularly admired that a. it was anonymous and b. no one airbrushed away her colostomy bag. Rosie O said “You don’t need to airbrush away the truth for us anymore. We can handle the reality.”  Rosie P said her final request would be to be brought to the French Culinary Institute in Paris to eat as many desserts as possible. Nicolle said she would want to be with people she loves, especially her baby. Rosie O would want to be with her wife and children floating in the ocean in Miami. Whoopi would probably be in Greece because it represents the beginning of everything.

Guests:

Nathan Lane & Matthew Broderick: Actors Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick joined the ladies of The View for a fun discussion on their Broadway revival of “It’s Only a Play.” They discussed how they met (Was it the Peace Corps or hot wing night at Hooters?), what it was like recording the voices for The Lion King, and how it’s been working together again.  Nathan reminisced about what it was like working on The Birdcage with the late Robin Williams. Nathan said about his friend, “No one was kinder and more generous. He was a sensitive beautiful person and we should be glad we had him.”  Matthew and Whoopi briefly discussed their time together filming Jumping Jack Flash.  During their discussion about It’s Only a Play they discussed the fantastic cast and how Terrence McNally has revamped it for today. The Rosie’s are mentioned in the show!  Nathan described it as a behind-the-scenes look at a play on opening night as they await the reviews.  Rosie P. said the show is “laugh out loud” funny.  And Rosie O recommended everyone come see it.  She said there’s nothing like the feeling of “that waxy playbill and that velvety seat. You should come to New York and experience Broadway if you haven’t already.”

Medical Marijuana: Paige Figi and Joel Stanley joined the panel to discuss Charlotte’s Web, a form of medical marijuana that helps children with violent seizures. Paige said at her worst, her daughter had two seizures an hour that were sometimes so severe her heart would stop.  She said doctors were ready to give up on her daughter.  She was 5 years old, with a do not resuscitate order.  She was wheelchair-bound, on a feeding tube, with oxygen, in hospice care and seizing every 30 minutes.  When they tried the medical marijuana oil they had nothing left to try pharmaceutically.   The oil from marijuana was the only drug that could provide her daughter, and the many other children who suffer in this way, some relief.  Joel Stanley grows the plant and sells the extract in Colorado where medical marijuana is legal.  He said the oil provides no “high” because it is low in THC and non-psychoactive.  He said the hemp extract is made in a lab given and given in measured doses.  And he wanted to make it clear that this treatment is not about children smoking marijuana however, this treatment is not legal everywhere in the U.S. and they want to change that.

Rite Aid Makeovers for Breast Cancer Survivors:   Want to find clips of the show? Here’s a link to watch clips online!

Quote-ables:

Rosie O:  “You don’t need to airbrush away the truth for us anymore. We can handle the reality.”

Rosie P:  [regarding It’s Only a Play]  It was “Laugh out loud funny.”

Whoopi:  [about medical marijuana] This is not about being high.  This is about saving lives.”

Nicolle: “It is hard to see someone you love get beaten up by the media.”

Nathan Lane: [about Robin Williams] “No one was kinder and more generous. He was a sensitive beautiful person and we should be glad we had [time with] him.”

Hot Topics:

  • About Last Night: Rosie P went out last night and saw It’s Only a Play starring Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick.  She loved it! She said it was very funny and added that Matthew and Nathan will be on The View on Friday (10/17)! One of the highlights of her evening was the great feedback she’s been getting about The View!  She heard a lot of compliments on her wardrobe and how she’s even influencing Nicolle’s style! Her friends told her Nicolle is “looking very sexy these days!” Rosie O and her wife Michelle went out last night on a “much needed” date.  They saw Carol Burnett and Brian Dennehy in Love Letters. Click here to see pics!  And on November 2nd, Rosie O will interview Carol Burnett at 92Y. When the event organizers asked her if she wanted notes about Carol, Rosie’s response was, “No. I know everything about her.” Rosie O is a huge fan of the comedy legend. Can’t make it to the event?  You can watch it LIVE here!  And last night Whoopi went to see Sherri Shepherd in Cinderella. Sherri didn’t know Whoopi was coming and Sherri burst into tears when she saw her. Sherri sent her love to everyone back at The View.   Whoopi had a great time at the play and told everyone watching to take their kids to see it if they can. Rosie O agreed.  She saw Cinderella when her pal Fran Drescher was starring in it and  said her kids loved the show too.
  • Putting Ebola In Perspective: Because of the recent Ebola cases in the U.S., President Obama has cancelled a fundraising trip. The panel discussed the recent case of the healthcare worker who was cleared to fly by the CDC despite telling them she had recently worked around an Ebola patient and had a mild fever. Rosie O thought maybe the massive budget cuts the CDC last year might have something to do with the errors. She reported that in 2013 the CDC cut 45,000 jobs.  Nicolle pointed out that the CDC didn’t deny what they told the nurse.  The CDC stood by their advice which was that it was okay for her to fly because her fever didn’t fit the protocol because it was only 100.4 degrees. Rosie O hopes that people will not let the hysteria begin to rule their lives. She said one person died from Ebola in the U.S. One person. Rosie P still thinks the hysteria is partly due to the fact that we have a lack of leadership at the top because the Senate and the Congress didn’t confirm the Surgeon General Obama appointed. The entire panel loved Fox News’ Shepard Smith’s comments about Ebola. Basically he advised the audience to not buy into the hysteria.  Rosie O exclaimed, “God bless him!”  Whoopi said the fact that our leaders don’t know the proper protocol is what’s most concerning to her. Nicolle feared politics will come into play now with politicians battling over whether or not we start denying incoming flights from the countries most affected by the virus. Rosie O said sometimes we have to choose facts over fear. She said in the last week 703 Americans died because of guns and 602 Americans died from unintentional falls.  She said ONE American died from Ebola.  Whoopi hopes moving forward when people are given a directive on what to do and not do after being with Ebola patients hopes they decide to follow it.
  • Goodbye To A Friend: Cuban-American actress Elizabeth Pena has died at 55. The actress has starred in many movies and television shows including Down and Out in Beverly Hills, Jacob’s Ladder and most recently, playing Sophia Vergara’s mother on the hit show Modern Family. Rosie P loved the actress very much and they showed a picture of the two of them together.  All of the ladies on the panel expressed their condolences to the family of Ms. Pena.
  • #SpiritDay: The ladies of The View were all wearing purple in honor of Glaad’s Spirit Day.  Whoopi invited viewers to do the same and share their images on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter using the hashtag #SpiritDay and/or #ChooseKindness. And if you’d like to learn more about #SpiritDay she invited viewers to visit Disney’s Be Inspired website which is a movement to prevent bullying. Rosie O mentioned how Laverne Cox will be lighting the Empire State Building purple for the first time ever in honor of the day!
  • Fangate: At a Gubernatorial debate last night, Governor Charlie Crist asked for a fan to be placed at the bottom of his podium and for 7 minutes Governor Rick Scott refused to join the debate!  Nicolle, who has been to a few political debates in her lifetime, said every aspect of every debate is carefully negotiated by each party. From the temperature of the room, to what the candidates will wear, the campaign parties negotiate each aspect ahead of time. Nicolle thought Rick’s move to delay the debate made him look bad and said he should’ve gone right out when the debate started. Rosie O said Scott’s move made him look like an “asshole!” Rosie P thought Rick missed a great opportunity for a funny moment.  And Whoopi called him “just another politician with his head in his butt.”
  • Postponing Motherhood: Apple and Facebook have offered to pay for female employees to freeze their eggs if they would like to hold off on motherhood in order to concentrate on their careers. Critics of this move are saying these companies are coming out with this offering in order to keep their female employees from having children. Nicolle did not agree. She thinks it’s great and an added benefit. She thinks it gives the women reproductive freedom. Rosie P referred to the move as “modern day family planning.” She said she waited to have a baby until the time was right in her career and now it’s too late for her and that saddens her. She told a story of a friend of hers that one night called her hysterically crying at 3:00am because she had just come to the realization that it was too late to have a baby. Rosie O said her wife Michelle also has regrets about waiting until it was too late to have a baby.  Whoopi said she has exactly two eggs left and she is more than happy to give them to Rosie P if she would like them. Awwwwwww.
  • NPH Hosting the Oscars: The ladies discussed the latest news that Neil Patrick Harris will be hosting the Oscars! All the ladies on the panel were very excited for NPH. They then recalled all the times Whoopi hosted the Oscars. Here’s a fun fact: Did you know Whoopi was the host of the Oscars the year Rosie P was nominated? True story!
  • HBO Streaming Service: The ladies of The View discussed the recent news that HBO is going to start offering a streaming service without having to have a monthly HBO subscription through your cable company. Rosie P called the move a “game changer,” especially for sports. She wondered how this move was going to affect things like pay-per-view sporting events. Rosie O was extremely happy about the move because it says it will allow more people to enjoy the fantastic documentaries HBO has available. She mentioned her friend Sheila Nevins, who is the President of HBO Documentary Films, whom she called a “genius and a god.”   Rosie thinks allowing more people to view these documentaries will be a “gift to humanity and the world.” Nicolle sees HBO making a smart move for the future. Whoopi is excited that more people will be able to have access to great television without having to pay the crazy fees. All the ladies agreed, it was a brilliant business move.
  • Family Feud: In a not so smart move, a woman made a hilarious guess on a recent episode of Family Feud. When the woman was asked, “When we asked 100 American women if you could change one part of your husband’s body, what would it be?” She answered, “His penis!” Only “penis” wasn’t one of the answers! Rosie O said “Apparently she was the only one surveyed who thought her husband had a bad weiner.”

Guests:

Alan Cumming: Alan Cumming joined Rosie P and Rosie O for a discussion about his role on The Good Wife, his role in the Broadway show Cabaret and a touching discussion about his new book Not My Father’s Son: A Memoir.   Alan said his memoir was partially inspired by his appearance on the show Who Do You Think You Are.   Two nights before he started filming the show, his father, who he hadn’t seen in 16 years because he was very abusive, told his brother to tell him he wasn’t his son.  He said the book chronicles that summer as well as the other revelations he made about his life growing up with an abusive parent.  “The Rosie’s” thanked Alan for his honesty in the book and promised to come see  him again soon in Cabaret on Broadway.   The Good Wife airs on CBS on Sundays at 9/8c.

Whoopi: “Another politician with his head up his butt.”

Nicolle: “We live in a borderless world when it comes to disease.”

Alan Cumming: [about his abusive father] “The great thing about the book for me is realizing that he is not to be understood. He was not for me to understand, I just happened to be unfortunate enough to be a part of it.”

Tessa Thompson: [about racism and her new movie Dear White People] “We’re in a time when we really need to discuss these things and have these cross-cultural conversations.”

The nurses are now saying there were not proper safety protocols in place at the hospital when they were treating Duncan. The World Health Organization has warned if the disease is not contained in the next two months, we could see 10,000 Ebola cases a week.   Whoopi wondered if it’s of value to provide the public with such “harsh and crazy” statistics. Rosie P thinks the statistics are important and wished we had a U.S. Surgeon General to guide us during this time. But she said “people are playing politics” and we didn’t confirm the Surgeon General nominee that President Obama appointed last November.   She thinks it’s a scary time and we need a leader.  Whoopi again recommended ABC News’ Chief Health Medical Editor Dr. Richard Besser (to be our Surgeon General), whom she always refers to as Dick. I think she just likes saying Dick on T.V. sometimes. 🙂 Nicolle commented how the panel was “pretty hard” on Dr. Nancy Snyderman’s actions on yesterday’s show but said since we now have a second healthcare worker infected, it further proves how no one is safe. She said everyone has to be careful. She especially appreciated the Mayor of Dallas’ response to the second diagnosed patient.  Nicolle said he did just the right thing by spreading calm and information.  Rosie O complimented the nurses who are on the front lines battling this epidemic. She said “the nurses are the heroes.” Whoopi said more people are dying from the flu and Enterovirus than Ebola and people should be more afraid of catching those diseases. She ended the discussion by saying, “We’re all in this together and have to look out for each other.”
  • Uber Fail: Instead of calling a taxi, a woman from LA called a driver using the app Uber and said her driver took her on a 2 hour ride from hell to an abandoned parking lot. When she called Uber to complain she received an automated reply and a refund. Rosie P once used Uber for a ride and said the guy who drove up was wearing jeans and a messy t-shirt while driving a Honda Civic.  She didn’t feel safe enough to get in the car. Rosie O’s wife Michelle told Rosie she’s never allowed to use Uber and deleted the app from Rosie’s phone the first time she mentioned it to her. Whoopi wants to know that when a company hires drivers it knows the people working for them.  Nicolle said if Uber loses their reputation in NYC, and people start trusting taxi drivers more, Uber is out of business. Rosie P said what made her call Uber in the first place was because cab drivers wouldn’t stop for her.  She said if cab drivers start stopping for people of color, she will start using taxis again.
  • Rosie P’s Apology: Rosie P apologized for the comments she said yesterday about divorce and the Catholic Church. She received a lot of responses regarding her comments and she wanted to clear up any misinformation. She read the Church’s position on divorce and attending mass.  The church says divorced Catholics may continue as full members of the church and receive communion if they do not remarry. If they do wish to remarry, they must receive a Catholic annulment of their first marriage so they can receive communion again. Rosie P asked for forgiveness and forgave those who criticized her too.
  • Pandering to Hispanics?: New York Governor Cuomo has plans to visit Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic and his opponent is saying he’s pandering to the Hispanic community. Rosie P first asked who is he to speak for the Hispanic community and then called the Governor’s move “smart politics.” She thinks it’s a good move to get to know more about the people who represent a large percentage of your base. Nicolle pointed out that everyone panders for the Hispanic vote because the Hispanic vote is that important. She said her former boss George W. Bush received a large percentage of the Hispanic vote because he regularly talked to the Hispanic community. Nicolle said if a community feels “pandered” to don’t vote for the person. She wished the Republican candidate was reaching out to the Hispanic community too. Whoopi said “panders” is a crappy word. Nicolle agreed and said it’s a derogatory way of saying “reaching out.”
  • The 772nd Reason Whoopi Won’t Fly: A Dallas bound American Airlines flight had to turn back to San Francisco after the cabin walls started to crack while in the air!   Whoopi couldn’t believe the pilot didn’t immediately want to land the plane. Apparently, he hesitated. Rosie P said she would pay to be on a flight with Whoopi so she could witness her in-flight antics. Whoopi said her antics aren’t pretty! She gets so angry she has to cover her face so no one can see her and take a pill to go to sleep. Rosie O has witnessed it!
  • Only 70 Shopping Days Left Until Xmas: Rosie O thinks the shopping panic has already started! Every year she gets her family matching Christmas pajamas.  She looked online for them yesterday and all of her first choices were already gone! She said people better start shopping now before everything is gone. Whoopi told Rosie O she needs to start Christmas shopping in August. Rosie said she’s been a little busy with a new show and all those children. Nicolle told Whoopi that people like her mess it up for the rest of them by shopping so early and buying everything off the shelves!
  • Girls Are Athletes Too: A 12 year old girl is getting a lot of press for a letter she wrote to Dicks Sporting Goods criticizing their latest catalogue. In the letter she comments about the fact that there are no female athletes pictured in the publication. In fact, the only girl pictured is a girl sitting in the stands. The young girl, McKenna Peterson, has been playing basketball since the first grade and is a huge WNBA fan. Nicolle said Dicks Sporting Goods wrote the girl a letter back apologizing for the error and telling her that next year they will make sure women are represented in their catalogue. Nicolle pointed out that 40% of people playing sports today are female. And Rosie P added that only 4% of media coverage about sports covers female athletics. She listed a number of companies and organizations that have products and sections specifically geared towards females.  Rosie P told McKenna, “Good for you young lady and keep it going.”
  • Chels Gets Pierced: Rosie O told the group that she took her 17 year old daughter, Chelsea, to get a nose-ring as a reward for doing well in school. Rosie said her daughter really wanted one and since she is almost 18, she thought that was a better choice than a car or tattoo. The guy who did the piercing for Chelsea called Rosie “one cool mom.” Rosie O said some of her friends aren’t too sure about her decision to let her get the piercing. Nicolle thought it was a great thing. She said she took her somewhere safe and clean to get it done and the fact that Chelsea asked Rosie to take her says a lot about their relationship. Rosie O said the nose-ring might not be everyone’s choice but she believes it’s important to be yourself.  Whoopi recalled the times her mother used to yell at her for wearing short mini-skirts. She couldn’t be told not to wear mini-skirts and it wasn’t until she figured out that the short skirts just made her butt cold that she decided to stop wearing them. Rosie O said it was all worth it when on the way home Chelsea grabbed her mom’s hand and said, “Thanks, Mom.”
  • Little Girls for Hillary: Lastly, the panel discussed a photo that’s gone viral of a little girl who was really excited to meet Hillary Clinton while she was campaigning in Colorado this week. All the ladies loved her reaction to meeting the possible Presidential nominee and encouraged adults to talk to their kids about politics and the impact they can make in the world.

Guests:

Gloria Estefan:  Gloria Estefan is bringing her rags to riches story to Broadway in a new musical entitled On Your Feet.  They discussed her husband Emilio (who Rosie O called “the nicest guy in the world”), her story of fleeing Cuba to come to the USA and the connections she’s had with several American Presidents. They discussed the time she met Ariana Grande, who she said is a wonderful artist and her search for the star of her musical that will play herself.  They discussed her daughter Emily, who is now at college, and the first time she sang for her.  And in honor of National Hispanic Heritage month Gloria brought flan, Rosie O’s least favorite dessert, for all the hosts to try!  Rosie O ate it begrudgingly and yelled out, “This is not a dessert!”  If you’re unfamiliar with the whole “flan” back-story, watch this clip of Kathy Griffin’s “My Life on the D List” when Kathy, Rosie and Gloria visit a restaurant in Miami and Gloria tries to force-feed Rosie flan!  You will laugh.  I promise.

Nicole Richie: Nicole Richie joined the panel to discuss her web series Candidly Nicole based off her Twitter feed.  She said the show is a humorous look at how she’s not always caught up on all the different aspects of life.   She also said the show’s about learning, laughing, exploring and having fun with herself while doing it.  They discussed Halloween costumes and her appearance in this week’s People magazine with her father Lionel.  They showed a clip of Nicole and her father Lionel performing the song Climbing on YouTube.  CandidlyNicole is a web series available now on AOL!

Discreet Discussions: Rosie O and Marilu Henner sat down with a few audience members to discuss the many things that women only talk about with their girlfriends including waxing, shaving, long-term relationships, marriage, and what it feels like when our kids leave the nest.

The Bridge: Rosie O then gave a quick plug for one of her favorite shows The Bridge on FX.  She asked viewers to check it out because they may love it like she does and hopefully it will get renewed!
