  • Quarantine Controversy: NBC Chief Medical Editor, Dr. Nancy Snyderman has apologized for breaking her 21 day voluntary quarantine after being directly exposed to Ebola and then going to a local restaurant. Whoopi read her apology to the audience and asked if it was enough. Nicolle didn’t think her apology was enough because she was supposed to set an example as a public figure. She said if Nancy doesn’t think it’s necessary to follow the quarantine, how can she ask or expect others to follow it? Whoopi agreed and thought even if the Dr. didn’t have symptoms she still should have followed the guidelines. Rosie O also agreed and thought her apology was “crappy.” She thought she should have completely admitted fault instead of mildly taking responsibility. Rosie P was happy she apologized but thought it was “a day late and a dollar short.” Whoopi joked that audiences can see her in that Lifetime movie! Nicolle thought Nancy missed an opportunity to be a spokesperson for the quarantine. She said she can no longer go on air and claim the quarantine is important to follow because she didn’t find it important enough to follow herself.
  • Questionable Company: Some people are angry that the President’s daughters and Nobel Prize winner Malala Yousafzai are on the same list as Kendall and Kylie Jenner on Time Magazine’s Most Influential Teens. Rosie P made the point that the list details the most influential teens, not the smartest or the most important teens. She said it’s the public’s fault for them being “influential” not the Jenner’s fault. Rosie P said the Jenner sisters are busy, young women that work really hard. Whoopi agreed that the sisters have influence over young people’s style. She said the public may not like the Kardashian sisters but the Jenners are working for a living. Nicolle thinks their last name gives them opportunities that others do not get. Whoopi pointed out that their last name is Jenner not Kardashian. Rosie O admitted she is “Kardashian/Jenner illiterate.” She knows who some of the sisters are married to, but that’s about it. Rosie P thinks the fame may make it easier for the Jenner sisters to succeed but said there are plenty of rich kids that are privy to great opportunities that don’t take advantage of them.
  • Russell Brand Rewind: Whoopi mentioned that many viewers thought that Russell Brand took a real shine to Nicolle during his recent View appearance! Nicolle said Russell has mastered the art of throwing you off base by speaking to you at close range. Both Rosies shouted that Russell was totally flirting with Nicolle! Nicolle went home and told her husband that Russell Brand “maybe might have kissed her on TV.” Rosie P thought it was cool how she confronted him about some of his beliefs. Nicolle thinks Russell has a platform, but she doesn’t think he is prepared to give people the tools to do what he wants done. Rosie O defended Russell’s basic philosophy and said there are people in the world that are more qualified to set up the economic structure that doesn’t oppress the poor. She said Russell is the person who will help get people to show up and then the smart leaders will take over. Nicolle thinks it is a dangerous message to tell people not to vote in the USA five weeks before an important election. Whoopi thinks too many people died for the right to vote and said voting is an important issue to her.
  • ArtBeam Gallery Wat-Ahh Exhibit: Rosie P announced the art exhibit that combines a positive message on drinking water and good health for young people. She showed her husband’s painting that illustrates the movement’s purpose, which is also supported by First Lady Michelle Obama.
  • Vatican’s Views Evolving: The Vatican may be following the progressive views of Pope Francis (and Jesus! Whoopi added) as a new report calls for the church to welcome and accept gay people. The report says gays and lesbians have gifts and qualities to offer the Christian community though they still do not support gay marriage. Whoopi said it’s not perfect but “it’s a start and we’ll take it!” Rosie O agreed and said this is the first Pope to ever even use the word “gay.” Rosie P said the Bible tells us that God is the one to judge, not us. Nicolle said the Pope understands the world is changing and is bringing the Catholic Church with him in a lasting way. Whoopi said we’re all human and there is no reason for a church to say “you’re not welcome.”  Then she said, “Jesus had some interesting friends, just saying.” Rosie P thinks there are still some antiquated rules within the Catholic Church like how after mass but you can’t take communion if you’re divorced.  Still, Rosie O has a profound respect for the new Pope, his beliefs, the changes he’s made and how he rejects the excesses of the Vatican. She said he’s the first pope that she’s ever felt connected to.
  • Ugly as Sin: New Hampshire State Rep. Steve Vaillancourt (R) says their Congresswoman Rep. Ann McLane Kuster (D-N.H.) is bound to lose her re-election because she is ugly as sin. Whoopi said he looks like a bulldog! Rosie P said judging someone’s appearance keeps the good ones from doing the great jobs. Nicolle thinks statements like these are the reason why people are so turned off by politics.  Whoopi commented that she’s never heard anyone talk about a male candidate’s looks.
  • Microsoft CEO’s Bad Karma: Microsoft CEO, Satya Nadella, states that women should not ask for raises; they should just have faith that the system will give them the right raises as they go along. Nicolle said the “system” allows men to negotiate 57% of the time for a higher salary while women only negotiate 7% of the time. She said women who leave their careers up to Karma are screwed and women have to fight for everything they get in the workforce. She thought the CEO’s statement was crazy. Nicolle was all riled up! She was sure it was a planned “little sermon and not an off-handed comment.” Whoopi said it’s like black people saying, “Oh no, we’ll just wait on slavery and trust the system!” She thought it was nuts and he shouldn’t talk because it’s bad for business.
  • Does this add up? Two math professors are saying that math skills have nothing to do with inborn talent or genetics but it all comes down to hard work. Rosie O did not believe it. Whoopi said, as a dyslexic, that statement bothers her because they make it sound like some people aren’t working hard and that’s why they’re bad at math. Rosie P agreed with regard to people who have learning disabilities and argued that people can’t make a blanket statement for all people. She said when you tell a child they are not good at math because they didn’t test well, you hold them back. She thought the professors’ comments were dangerous. Rosie O said her dad was an electrical engineer and he used to tell her that Russian satellites could read our license plates and used to yell at her when she couldn’t do her math. Whoopi is afraid that calculators are making us dumber.
  • Frozen Doll: Carl from the show got Rosie O an Elsa doll from the movie Frozen to give to her daughter who loves the film. Rosie gave it to Dakota and they showed a video of her opening the gift. Dakota’s face lit up with delight as she pressed the buttons to make the doll talk and sing.

Guests:
Laverne Cox: Laverne Cox joined Rosie O and Nicolle to talk about her role on the hit show Orange is the New Black. She also has a new documentary out entitled, “Laverne Cox Presents: The T-word.” They talked about her career, transitioning, difficulties with pronouns when a loved one transitions and her guest appearance on the show Faking It. The T-word airs this Friday night at 7:00pm EST on MTV.

Meghan McCain: Meghan McCain joined Rosie P and Whoopi to talk about turning 30, her experiences with the Secret Service, her show Take Part Live and the Democratic and Republican front runners for 2016.

Quote-ables:

Rosie O: [to Laverne Cox] “You’re doing so much for so many, carry on in the light.”

Nicolle: “It is a dangerous message to tell people not to vote.”

Whoopi: “Jesus had some interesting friends, just saying.”

Rosie P: “Judging people’s appearances keep the good ones from doing great jobs.”

Laverne Cox: “Pronouns matter when we talk with and about trans people.”

Meghan McCain: “I just wish people would stop thinking that women are expiring when they hit 30.”

And that’s what you missed!

Hot Topics:

  • Oscar Pistorius: In case you missed it, Whoopi started the show letting the audience know that Oscar Pistorius was about to be sentenced and they would let the audience know if the sentencing was announced during the show.
  • Weekend Wrap-up: The panel then discussed their weekends. Rosie P was in Maine filming a movie with Diane Wiest. She didn’t identify the movie by name but she said it’s a film about grief and loss. She commented how beautiful it is in Maine, how wonderful the people were and said she’ll be back to continue filming this weekend.  Rosie O and her son Blake have a tradition to go see a movie together the first weekend of every month. He always gets to select the film and this weekend they saw The Judge starring Robert Downey, Jr. and Robert Duvall. She loved the film and said Robert Downey, Jr. has never been better. There was a very touching scene in the film where Robert Downey is taking care of his elderly father (who is ill) and Rosie O said she was so taken she reached out and squeezed her son’s hand, hard. Nicolle said she caught up on the Showtime series Homeland. Nicolle found herself harshly judging the main character in the show for leaving her new baby behind in order to take a job that required her to travel to Afghanistan. She said she hated that she felt so judgmental of her because she knew if that were a man, she might not have felt those same harsh feelings. But she admitted she couldn’t help herself. Then Rosie O and Nicolle discussed the show and the scene where the main character contemplates drowning her baby in the bathtub! Rosie O said she was screaming at the TV!
  • Ebola Transmitted on U.S. Soil: The panel discussed the latest news about the first confirmed case of Ebola being transmitted on U.S. soil. The Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases said there was a breach of protocol that led to the nurse being infected with Ebola. Rosie P thought it was irresponsible for them to state there was a breach of protocol unless they know that for sure. She said they shouldn’t cause that speculation if they aren’t positive how the transmission occurred. Whoopi thinks the nursing staff may have been plagued with old, antiquated supplies like old gloves, and that’s how the transmission happened. She hoped all of our hospitals are using the best equipment available to treat these patients. Rosie P was offended the public is blaming nurses for the spread of the disease. Nicolle mentioned that in some cases all a hospital has to do to “check the box” that they’ve trained the staff and post a bulletin about how to care for Ebola patients. She said, in some cases, posting the bulletin is all the training they receive and they’re really only doing so in order to protect themselves from liability. Whoopi wondered if they should start screening people before they leave Africa instead of as they arrive. She also wondered why they’re not screening people at the LA airport. Rosie O said there’s speculation if we started screening people as they leave Liberia, the entire country might perish. She referenced a cartoon that illustrates what’s wrong with the media coverage concerning the crisis. Rosie P mentioned the story about Dr. Nancy Snyderman who violated the quarantine she was under after being exposed first-hand to the deadly disease. Rosie P called her actions “irresponsible” whether she’s infected or not. She said she’s putting fear into the public and as a public figure there’s no excuse for it. Nicolle said NBC is saying she was a very low risk to spread the disease but Whoopi said she had direct contact with a cameraman who was symptomatic! She told Dr. Snyderman, “That’s why they make a device called a telephone. Get delivery!”
  • Books Are Better: The American Academy of Pediatrics is stating that using a tablet or e-reader to read to your child is no different than watching television.  Nicolle and Rosie O agreed. Rosie O said her young daughter is allowed to play little games on the iPad but when it’s time to read a book she believes there’s vital contact, communication and bonding that occurs when you curl up with your child with a good book. Nicolle agreed and said we don’t know what effect all the screen time is going to have on our children and their ability to read. Whoopi thinks the bright light from the tablet is very bad for kids’ eyes. Rosie P said studies have shown the interaction between a parent and child between birth and 5 years old is critical to language development. She said if we keep using digital devices to teach our children language we’re all going to have children that end up talking like Siri!
  • Football Hazing Scandal: Seven Sayreville football players have been suspended amid an abuse scandal at a New Jersey High school. The football season has been canceled and some parents are saying it’s wrong to punish an entire team for the actions of a few. Whoopi thinks if you go up as a team you go down as a team. Rosie O and Rosie P noted some of the horrific, specific, allegations and said canceling the season was the right thing to do. Whoopi said not stopping the abuse was as wrong as being a perpetrator of it. Nicolle agreed and said that’s the ultimate message. She said it’s our duty to speak for those who cannot speak out for themselves. Rosie O said the same thing is true for her theater program Rosie’s Theater Kids. She said each student is given an RTK jacket and if they’re caught in the jacket doing anything inappropriate and someone calls the school to report them, they are asked to leave. She said unfortunately, it’s happened before at her school.
  • Susan Mellen: The panel discussed the recent story of a woman who was released after spending 17 years in prison for a murder she did not commit. The panel thought the woman was amazing the way she handled herself. All the ladies commented about the grace the woman showed under such a terrible turn of events.

Guests:

Russell Brand: Stand-up comedian, author, actor, activist and all-around genius, Russell Brand, joined the panel to discuss a myriad of topics. They discussed many different things including his Messiah Complex World Tour, his 11 years of sobriety from drugs and alcohol addiction, homelessness and the stigma that goes along with it, and his award for Shagger of the Year. They discussed Russell’s new book Revolution based on an Albert Einstein quote “We can’t solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them.” Russell said if we want to change things we have to look into alternative ways of thinking and if we want change to come it will not come from the people in control because they are being served by the crises that keep them in power. One of Russell’s favorite quotes is a Solzhenitsyn quote that states the lines between good and evil do not come between nations, religion, races or creeds but “the line dividing good and evil cuts through the heart of every human being.” To Russell that means we all have the capacity to be selfish or egotistical but he just tries to tend towards the best part of himself. Nicolle questioned Russell on his insistence that this revolution will not come about through voting. She asked him how he expects change to come without voting or violence, which is how most revolutions of the past have come about. Russell said he feels the political parties in Britain are more interested in representing the needs of big business than those of the people. Rosie O said it’s the same here in the U.S. He said an economic elite is now in power that doesn’t represent the values or the views of the people they claim to represent. They only represent the needs of other rich elites and corporations. Nicolle mentioned an interview with Paxman that has been seen almost 11 million times where she said Russell got a little “cross and testy.” (Though Russell didn’t think he was cross or testy in the interview.)  When Nicolle pressed Russell for a solution to overthrowing those in power without voting or violence, he said the people must “organize” in their workplaces and the places they live and if we are going to vote, we must vote for a party that represents the ordinary people not one that just represents the interests of big business. Russell’s frustration with the corporate owned news has also led him to create his own version of the news entitled The Trews, which stands for True News.

Russell-Brand-Rosie-Odonnell

#Internet Hero FanSince09: Rosie O welcomed Internet Hero FanSince09 who chose to hide his identity for the interview. When FanSince09 saw surveillance video of a Philadelphia gay couple being attacked by a straight mob outside a Philadelphia restaurant, FanSince09 used his Twitter following to help catch the suspects. He mobilized his then 5,000 Twitter followers to help find the alleged perpetrators. He explained to Rosie how he started with the restaurant where a group shot of the attackers was taken and by using Facebook’s “check-in” feature they matched the Facebook profiles to the people in the photo. That was how they identified three of the suspects who have since been charged with the crime. He said it only took him and his followers about two hours to narrow down and identify the suspects! Rosie thanked him for his desire to do something and said so many of us use the Internet for insignificant things but he chose to do something that changed lives. As it stands now Pennsylvania’s hate-crime law does not include crimes against gays and lesbians and the victims in this attack are hoping to change that law.

Audience Gift:Everyone in the audience received a copy of Russell Brand’s book Revolution.

Quote-ables:

Rosie O:  [about reading books to our children] “I think it’s a vital part of communication and bonding between parents and children.”

Nicolle:  [upon meeting Russell Brand] “I’m nervous, I’m the one who doesn’t know any famous people.”

Whoopi:  “Ebola doesn’t care where you’re from.”

Rosie P: “A lot of times in America we vote against our own self-interests.”

Russell Brand: “We need to choose our idol or our idols will be chosen for us.”

Russell Brand: “Sometimes other people are stigmatized because of something like homelessness but I know loads of people who are homeless and they’re exactly like me except for a roof.”

Russell Brand: “Everyone, ultimately, is looking for love.”

Russell Brand: “I think it is important to acknowledge that we are ultimately unified by our common humanity.”

And that’s what you missed!

Hot Topics

  • Police behaving badly: In case you missed it, Whoopi began by acknowledging all the good police officers working hard every day in their jobs but said there are a select few bad ones getting all the press.   They showed a video of a young man getting knocked out for allegedly smoking pot when he was only smoking a cigarette. Nicolle observed that it wouldn’t have been an appropriate police response even if he were smoking pot. She thinks this is why cops should wear GO PRO cameras to give evidence of the way they interact with the public.  Rosie P agreed and said cameras would protect the good and the bad cops. Rosie O recalled the Rodney King case and said it was seeing that type of brutality and the imbalance of power in a video that called people to action. Rosie P said big brother is watching and now the public is big brother. Whoopi asked if perhaps there’s a flaw with the way we are choosing who should be police officers.  Nicolle said a video such as this is heartbreaking for good cops to watch because it represents them badly to the world. Whoopi agreed and said the real hazard is that this paints an unfair picture of cops because there are so many good cops out there. She said the boneheads are getting all the attention.
  • Creepy Parent Things We Do: The panel discussed some of the creepy things parents do, like keeping baby teeth and taking pictures of the first time a kid uses a potty. Nicolle raised her hand!  Nicolle said the grossest thing she has done is save her son’s umbilical cord (which now smells like a fossil). David Carradene ate his kid’s placenta. Rosie O didn’t do that, but she did chew food for Parker and then fed it to him like a bird! Whoopi cringed at the thought. She acknowledged she only had one child for that very reason. And she added she doesn’t like to hold babies because all they do is sneeze on her. Rosie O’s child once threw up in her mouth! Rosie P said her cousin always picks up her child in order to smell his diaper. Rosie O said her older kids would do the “smell test” for her.
  • Parents Fail Homework Test: Whoopi read a survey that stated that half of parents struggle with their own kids homework.  Rosie P said it is the fault of our education system; it is antiquated and needs to be changed. She thinks it doesn’t teach critical or creative thinking. She also believes there should be a program to teach parents how to do homework with kids. She said the more you do with your child’s education, the more results you will see. Whoopi said she is severely dyslexic and couldn’t help her own child with her homework. Rosie P said it doesn’t work when we learn algebra just for a test. She said we have to learn it for a reason.
  • Right to Die: Brittany Maynard (29) is planning her own death on November 1 surrounded by friends and family. She has a stage 4 brain tumor that will eventually take her life and she is relieved that she doesn’t have to die the way it has been described to her. Whoopi informed us that there are only five states in the U.S. that allow patients to choose when they would like to die when they are terminally ill. Rosie O recalled the documentary How to Die in Oregon which follows four different terminal patients in Oregon and their choices to die on their own terms. Rosie O is an advocate of dying with dignity. Her friend Jeannie’s husband did it. When he got to the very end of his illness and became confused, Jeannie said, “It’s time to fly,” and he took off his own oxygen mask. She thinks it is the humane thing to do to have control over your own death after your illness has made you completely lose control over your own life. Rosie P agreed but acknowledged she would have trouble if it were her loved one that made the choice to die. She admitted, “It would be hard for me to support it. She said despite the fact she is a “recovering Catholic” she still has a very spiritual, religious family. She said her beliefs are “still there.” Whoopi said leaving this Earth should be on our own terms when people are terminally ill. She said, “Our loss doesn’t compare to theirs.” Nicolle spoke about how closeted the issue is. She said end-of-life decisions are horrific for the family and for the person. And she said there is a lack of people to turn to who are willing to give neutral advice. Whoopi’s mother told her, if she “goes” but is not quite gone, to put her in the microwave! She did not want to linger if she’s wasn’t mentally there. Whoopi thinks it is important to leave end of life instructions to your family members because it will make life easier for your family. Rosie O had a friend (who was chubby) say,” Promise me you won’t pull the plug until I’m a size six!”
  • Sex on Campus: A survey revealed that things are not that different today than when students’ parents were in college. It turns out over half of college-aged women surveyed were still virgins. Rosie P disclosed that she was a virgin when she started college, as was Rosie O. But Rosie P said she felt a ton of pressure to have sex. Nicolle flagged the story because it goes against what we are hearing about sexting, and she figured that more sex went along with more sexting. Whoopi said kids don’t have the same fears that were put in her. “If you get pregnant, you’ll be sent away.” She said girls who got pregnant were shunned once. Rosie P said they also held back having sex because of fear of AIDS.

Guests:

Whoopi and Rosie P welcomed Rascal Flatts who have their first new album out in 2 years. The new album, Rewind, was a chance for them to lean on each other and rediscover each other and their music. They discussed their families, wrapping up their 6-month tour, and staying healthy on the road. Whoopi asked for the group to sing a little piece of the song they sing a cappella on the album and they laid it OUT in perfect harmony. Rosie P and Whoopi loved it and so did the audience. Rascal Flatts performed Payback off their new album Rewind.

Dan Bukatinski Rosie O and Nicolle are still traumatized that the Emmy award winner was killed on the TV show Scandal. But now he has a new show: Marry Me on NBC. It’s a modern comedy about a gay couple and their married adult daughter. He also has a book, Does this Baby Make me Look Straight? Confessions of a gay dad. He says he identifies with mothers. Nicolle said about parenting: There are no rules and you do the best you can because your heart’s turned to mush. And he is bringing back The Comeback on HBO.

Game time!

Homegoods Retail Therapy: Rosie P is a huge shopper and a bargain hunter and she took the cameras on a trip with her to Homegoods so she could buy gifts for everyone at The View studios! She brought back all the awesome gifts she found and gave them to the other hosts. The hosts had to guess the price of each item she purchased: whether it was higher or lower than the price shown.

Audience Gift: Everyone received a copy of Dan Bukatinski’s Does this Baby Make Me Look Straight, a copy of Rascal Flatts new CD Rewind and a $100 Homegoods gift card! SCORE!

Quotables:

Whoopi: [About cops] “The boneheads are getting a lot of attention.”

Nicolle: [About parenting] “There are no rules and you do the best you can because your heart has turned to mush.”

Rosie O: “It is the humane thing to do to have control over your own death after you have lost control over your life.”

Rosie P:  “Big brother is watching and now the public is big brother.”

And that’s what you missed!

Hot Topics

  • Frozen is Number 1: In case you missed it, Rosie O was happy to announce that the #1 grossing animated movie of all time is Frozen! Her favorite! Rosie O thought for kids today, Frozen is the defining movie of their childhood. Nicolle believed that might be true for girls but not necessarily for boys. She said Cars is her son’s movie of choice. Nicolle said she liked Cars too, the first 1200 times she saw it.  They laughed about the “olden days” when you had to wait for your favorite shows to come on and you couldn’t just dial them up on demand.
  • We Are You: Rosie O was wearing a We Are You T-shirt in honor of National Coming Out Day this Saturday. Rosie P shared that last night on Wheel of Fortune the male contestant introduced his male fiancé and everyone remarked about how that symbolized a major breakthrough for mainstream TV. They all discussed how good (or bad) they were at guessing the puzzles on the iconic show.
  • Airports Screening For Ebola Passengers: Ebola is not going away anytime soon and Whoopi announced the increased screening they’re going to begin doing at five major U.S. airports. Rosie O thought the Ebola crisis is very serious in Africa, but she believes the concern may be overblown in the United States. Rosie P said despite the fact that it’s not a great threat here in the U.S. she believes we need to take as many precautions as we can. Nicolle was sad to hear they euthanized the dog of the Spanish nurse who was infected with the disease.  She said she’s also been thinking about what Dr. Besser had to say about not having enough Ebola fighting drugs available. She said just because it is a disease we don’t think we would get here doesn’t mean we shouldn’t be producing the antidotes in case we do.  Whoopi agreed and said since we knew the drug was hard to make, that’s all the more reason we should have been stocking up on it! Rosie O noted that 4,000 people have died so far from Ebola and in 2012, 1.6 million people died from AIDS. She said there is a financial element at play with pharmaceutical companies. She said there is no reason (for them) to stock up on a drug that will only help 4,000 people. Whoopi still thought they should have been proactive and produced the drug in case it came to the U.S. Rosie P wondered why  ebola victim Eric Duncan didn’t get the drug and noted that his family is very upset.
  • Stephen Collins: The controversy keeps growing over the investigation over the audio tape where actor Stephen Collins allegedly admits to molesting several young girls. Whoopi and Rosie O have known Stephen for years. Rosie O said she was “shocked and heartbroken” when she heard the news. She said whenever someone is accused of sexual abuse of children it devastates everyone in the radius of that person. Rosie O said having been a victim of sexual abuse as a child herself, she always has her “antennae” up for that and had absolutely no idea that he might even be capable of such things. She said that was what scared her the most. Nicolle commented on the legalities of the case and that Collins’ wife has been accused of pedaling the audio tape to the press. The wife claims that his lawyers are attempting to deflect focus from the content of the recording by attacking her for how it got out. Rosie O thought the audio sounds an awful like Stephen Collins and was horrified when she heard it. Whoopi ended the conversation saying you just never know who people truly are sometimes.
  • Who You Gonna Call: Director Paul Feig confirmed he is going for a reprise of Ghostbusters with an all female cast! Rosie O suggested the four of them should be tapped for the roles. They all laughed and Nicolle said she always wanted to be in a movie! Rosie P noted that the proposed cast does not contain a woman of color.
  • Premier of American Horror Story: Last night was the season premiere of the show American Horror Story. Whoopi loves to be so scared and she loves when a show takes her out of her realm. Nicolle can’t watch it alone and had to watch it with a girlfriend. Rosie P said her childhood was terrifying enough so she doesn’t like to be scared. Whoopi said horror movies teach you what not to do. She advises her white friends, “If you hear something in the house, don’t go up and say, ‘Is anybody there?’” She joked “Be black!” Rosie O said the opening credits were amazing but she bailed when the clown came on, and switched to Animal Planet. She does NOT want to see it again, not even a promo for it.
  • White House Emojis: The White House is reaching out to millennials to try and get them to vote in the midterm elections by launching a social media campaign loaded with emojis. Nicolle said millennials are a huge part of President Obama’s base and the Democrats are very worried about these elections because the 6th year of the president’s term is always very hard on the acting president’s party. She liked the creativity and thought if a smiley face gets people to get out and vote, she’s okay with it. Rosie O didn’t really understand what emojis they were using exactly. Rosie P thinks this generation is very tuned into social media and this is a great way to reach them. Whoopi wondered if this is a signal that more and more people are substituting words with emoticons. Rosie O remembered an emoji puzzle you would have to solve when she used to play the game Concentration.
  • President Carter: President Carter has come out against President Obama for waiting too long to confront ISIS. Whoopi thought it was funny because they also said the same thing about Carter, that he waited too long. Nicolle said Panetta came out with a very similar criticism of Obama this week. She said what is surprising about Carter criticizing Obama is throughout American history, no one on the ideological spectrum is more closely aligned to Obama’s foreign policy than Carter. Rosie P wished the president would have acted sooner and stronger but she also noted that the country is doing better in terms of jobs. Nicolle is stunned we have added jobs for 55 months in a row to Obama’s credit but no candidate wants to see Obama at a campaign event. She said there is nothing about being president that is fair and there’s not much about the job that is particularly fun. Rosie P noted that George W. Bush won’t criticize Obama, ever. Nicolle agreed and said Carter has been more critical of Obama than George W. Bush has been or ever will be. Rosie O said Carter is an outlier, a man of peace, the most pious person she has ever met in her life and her most favorite president ever.
  • Whoopi On Stage: Whoopi announced she will be performing standup this Friday and Saturday night. Friday she will be at Foxwoods Casino in Mashantucket, CT and Saturday she will be at the Ridgefield Playhouse in Ridgefield, CT. Go see her!

She said a big part of the show is a tribute to her mother. Cristela premieres Friday night at 8:30/7:30c on ABC!

  • Presidential Meet Ups:  In case you missed it, last night Rosie O went to her friend Bill White’s house for a lunch with President Obama!  There were about 20 other people there and she was almost late to the lunch because she was coming right from the show.  She arrived sweating and nervous and then the Secret Service had to take her cell phone (as procedure).  But she was expecting a text from her daughter Chelsea so she asked the Secret Service to hand her her phone if her daughter texted her.  And then they did because Chelsea started texting!  Rosie O quickly texted Chelsea back just before the president arrived.  Her first observations of him was how thin and charismatic he was. The only other well-known person at the lunch was Mark Wahlberg  and Rosie O couldn’t stop thinking about him in his underwear.  Everyone there was allowed to ask one question and Rosie O asked how his daughters were coping with the fame of being the First Daughters and if it was really what he thought it would be. Rosie had to leave right after the visit to go to therapy with her daughter and felt incredibly awkward trying to get up and leave the room.  On the way home she couldn’t believe that a girl from Long Island was just having lunch with the sitting President of the United States.  Also at the lunch were two African American boys and Rosie O wished she could have asked them what it was like for them to meet Obama.  Whoopi recalled the scene from the show Blackish where the kids on the show aren’t that impressed there’s a black president because Obama is the only president they have ever known.  Nicolle shared with the group that all presidents have great stories of inviting their harshest critics into the Oval Office.  She said outside the office, critics are quick to criticize the president but once they walk into the Oval Office they are blown away.  She assured Rosie O that he probably loved her question about what it is like living in the bubble because it was a real question. Whoopi has met several presidents, and recalled the time she was able to take her mother to meet President Bill Clinton.  Her mother really liked Clinton and was so excited to meet him.  Whoopi also said her mother cried the night Obama was elected. Rosie O was shooting the film America with Ruby Dee the night of the 2008 election and after Obama was elected she went to Ruby’s hotel room and they hugged.  They both cried. Rosie P met Bill Clinton once with her friend and it was embarrassing. He greeted her friend with a “Hello darlin’, and her friend said, “Oh, I get it. I get everything.” Her meeting with Obama was also “trippy,” because she was using a cane at the time (because of an injury) and Obama tripped over it!  Then Rosie P announced some happy news: It is the 50th anniversary of Fania All Stars, a musical ensemble of Latin musicians.
  • Sexting as foreplay: A new study found that more than one quarter of teens are engaged in sexting, which is an indicator that they will be sexually active within a year.  Whoopi said parents are freaking out because this wasn’t around when they were kids and now it’s the new norm. Rosie P cited that 40% of all teens have posted or sent suggestive messages. She said when she was a teen, she was so insecure about her body she didn’t want to get naked in gym class, let alone take a picture of her “hooha” and share it with everyone! She thinks it will kill kids’ self esteem in the long run.  Rosie O uses an app called Teen Safe, so she can check every site her teens have visited.  And her kids know she is watching.  Whoopi said, as parents we are not there to be our kids’ friends.  One time her daughter threatened to call youth services on her.  She dialed the number for her!
  • Ebola Patient’s Dog’s Fate Hangs in the Balance: A Spanish patient’s pet dog is set to be euthanized after its owner contracted Ebola.  Nicolle said if the dog is asymptomatic they should let him live.  Rosie P agreed and said that dogs are part of the family.  Then she mimicked a dog farting and looking around to see where it came from (ha!).  **Unfortunately, since the show aired, the dog has been euthanized.

Viral Video:  Kangaroos Street Boxing Whoopi observed that kangaroos look cute, but you wouldn’t want to get kicked by one! Rosie O said her neighbor, Gloria Estafan (who will be on the show next week for Hispanic Heritage Month), had a pet kangaroo and it was a lot of work but (according to Whoopi) no one broke into her house!
