  • The Dangerous Sidewalks of NYC: Rosie P said a cyclist almost ran her over yesterday! She came really close to hitting her and made her fall back into a lamppost. The cyclist gave a pathetic apology and Rosie P didn’t want to repeat on air what she said back to her! Nicolle understood Rosie P’s frustration with cyclists in New York City. She said, “they think they’re in the Tour de France!”  Whoopi said the real problem on the New York City sidewalks are the ladies texting and not paying attention as they’re pushing the “damn baby carriages.” She said they’re texting and pushing the stroller and next thing you know you have “twins up your behind!”  Nicolle hates when she sees nannies texting and pushing kids in the strollers. She said she goes up to nannies while they’re texting and takes the kids’ pictures and tells them she knows the mother and she’s going to send her the photo! (even though she doesn’t ever know the mothers) Rosie O said Nicolle is much more of a “badass” than she is! Whoopi said she knew this about Nicolle and said she’s, “scared of her, she don’t play!”
  • Meditative Coloring: It turns out that adults can de-stress by coloring. Rosie O knows this better than anyone. She is an avid zentangler, crafter and a doodler.   They showed pictures of some of her art and munnys she’s created. She mentioned a book you can purchase that teaches you how to zentangle. Rosie said the hobby has been very meditative and calming for her. Whoopi completely agreed. She loves coloring and said it calms her. She also likes the challenge of coloring in the lines. Rosie O said she’s even got her friend Howard Stern into zentangles! You can purchase some of Rosie’s art and zentangles here. All proceeds benefit Rosie’s Theater Kids.
  • Kissing = Good Parenting: A new study finds that couples who practice PDA are better parents and raise happier kids. Rosie O thinks it’s great when kids are able to grow up in a house with parents who love each other. She said she and her wife will try to go upstairs to “watch a movie” and she tells the kids she needs to “pay a lot of attention to the movie” so they shouldn’t be interrupted! Chelsea, her daughter, will just say out loud, “They’re doing it.” Rosie O thinks showing affection in front of your kids teaches them about healthy, loving relationships. Nicolle agreed and said her two year old loves it when they all hug. Rosie P said Latinos are very affectionate. Whoopi said so are black people! In fact, Whoopi always kisses all the hosts before each show. She said there have been some crazy rumors about how they don’t get along but the truth is, they actually all like each other. Sometimes they get a little stressed, loud or intense but it’s all okay. It’s part of human behavior and they sometimes bite! Rosie O laughed, agreed and said she’s been in timeout three times before, but not today!
  • Must Have Monday:  They’re going to show some fantastic gifts you’re going to love to give on the show on Monday.  There will be exclusive deals up to 80% off the retail price. You’re not going to want to miss it!  They briefly talked about shopping on the Internet and Home Shopping Network.
  • Another Recovering Catholic: Ariana Grande has said in a recent interview that she has decided to leave the Catholic religion because they rejected her openly gay brother. Rosie P said it was difficult for her to leave the church too but that doesn’t mean she doesn’t still believe in God and that she doesn’t still pray everyday. Rosie O said it was hard for her too to leave the Catholic church. She said all of her nieces and nephews are baptized and when Parker was born it was a big deal to her family when she didn’t get him baptized. But she didn’t want to baptize him into a church that didn’t accept his mother. Whoopi’s biggest problem is when organized religion doesn’t remember the original teaching of God, which was to love each other and accept one another. She again mentioned her love for Pope Francis and Rosie asked if Whoopi thought the Pope might stop by The View on his next trip to NYC. Whoopi has already written a letter to the Pope asking him to come visit the show when he comes to New York! She knew it would be out of the way for him to stop by the show but she told him they have 4 people on the panel that would love to speak to him who all believe in love.  Nicolle hopes we’re coming at the end of people having to make these types of decisions.  Rosie P hopes so too.  She said she had some mean nuns in her life but she had some wonderful nuns too, who changed her life.  Whoopi hopes the this is an example about how the world might be getting “a little bit better.”

Guests:

Edward Norton: The ladies of The View sat down with the incredibly talented Ed Norton who stopped by the studio to discuss his new movie Birdman. Ed said, when he became an actor he had hoped that he would get the opportunity to be involved in a movie that was really original and this was it for him. He said it’s unlike any movie he’s ever been in. He said the plot of the movie is very human and about someone having a midlife crisis and Michael Keaton is extraordinary in it. Even though the film is about theater people, Ed said it’s really about how all of us get plagued by our egos and ambitions.  Regarding the film’s Oscar buzz, Ed said he tries not to pay attention to it. He really just hopes people check it out and go see it.  They discussed the film Fight Club and how it’s the 15th anniversary of the movie. Ed said doing Fight Club was a special experience for him and captured a sensation about what the world felt like for us at the time.  But Ed said in 1989, it was Do The Right Thing, starring Rosie Perez, that made a huge impact on him.  He said it was like “throwing a hand grenade into the cultural conversation” and said it changed his “whole view of how dynamic film can be and what it can say.”  The film Birdman is available now so go see it!

Annie Lennox: Annie Lennox joined the ladies of The View to discuss her new album Nostalgia. She talked about how she picked the songs for the album from the “great American songbook” of original classics.  She said she had never really sung jazz before but really enjoyed doing it.  Annie has been participating in a lot of activism in the past decade which has detoured her a bit from her music.  All the ladies of The View expressed their love for Annie.   Rosie P asked about Annie’s recent comments she made about Beyonce which have been taken out of context in the media.  Annie referred to Beyonce as a “feminist light” but really did not mean any harm.  She didn’t realize Beyonce has been performing in front of a huge wall with the word “Feminist” behind her. When she was asked in a recent interview what she thinks of Beyonce she called her a “feminist light” because for her, there’s a spectrum of feminism. She was thinking of Eve Ensler who to her, is a “heavy weight feminist” and a woman who works “at the grass roots” level.  Annie adores Beyonce and said she’s extraordinary, gifted and beautiful.   And if she uses the term feminist, that’s fantastic. She welcomes it. At the end of the day it doesn’t really matter, we should all be standing shoulder to shoulder.  Annie talked about what it’s like as a musical artist being in “the deep end” accessing the feelings that allow her to make art.  She turned to the audience and asked everyone to put their hand up if they’ve ever felt depressed, felt miserable or had a dark experience. (everyone raised their hand)  She said that is the human experience and what music addresses.  She said it’s the “language of the heart, the language of the mind and the language of the soul.”  Annie closed by saying she’s privileged to live a life of music and happy to still be making it. She sang Georgia On My Mind from her album Nostalgia.

Justin Wiseman: Lastly, the fabulous Justin Wiseman joined Rosie O for a one-on-one.  Justin and Rosie became friends via Twitter as they bonded over their mutual weight loss.  Justin told Rosie she is an inspiration to him.  He said he was heavy all his life and mocked and tormented for it.  He was 100 pounds at age 5 and over 600 pounds at his heaviest.  He said he is an example what childhood obesity can turn into.  Justin was so heavy he had cirrhosis of the liver and sugar was literally crystallizing on his skin. He wanted to live, but he was too heavy for weight loss surgery.  Rosie inspired him to lose the weight. He called her a “beacon of light” that helps people every day.  Rosie asked Justin how he lost the weight and he said he created a “live it list” instead of a bucket list.  And instead of making a list of things he wanted to do before he died, he made a list of things he wanted to live for.  He also eventually lost enough weight to have vertical gastric sleeve surgery.   Justin said he never knew what it was like to live when he was heavy. He said the best part of his weight loss is his new found freedom!  Rosie said tweeting Justin is “delicious and delightful” and she is so proud of him in a maternal way.   Rosie gave Justin a Rosie Barbie doll and got him tickets to see Kinky Boots on Broadway with a backstage pass!

Editor’s Note: One thing Justin knows is that one word can change someone’s life forever.  His goal is to help someone else like Rosie has helped him.  I talked with him via Twitter and email today and asked him about his visit on The View.  Justin is extremely thankful for all the doors that are opening for him and the fact that he has been given this chance to bring attention to a cause he feels so passionately about- childhood obesity.  If you would like the opportunity to get to know Justin more you can follow him on his Twitter profile @theliveitlist and connect with him through his Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/theliveitlist

  • Today’s show was a little bit different because Whoopi was in Spain opening Sister Act: The Musical and Rosie P ate some shrimp last night that gave her food poisoning!  She came to the studio this morning but had to leave because she was too sick to go on. Natasha Lyonne had been scheduled to cover for Whoopi and they called Amy Robach and asked if she’d stand in for Rosie P. Get better soon Rosie P!

  • Shooting in Canada: The ladies started with a discussion about the shooting in Canada yesterday and the many questions it has stirred up in their nation and in the United States. Nicolle said it’s most important when we’re analyzing the situation that we remember Nathan Cirillo, a young single father, died yesterday. She said we’re so fast to the debate and begin discussing the politics of it all, we need to remember that a man died. Rosie O mentioned a tweet that model Chrissy Teigen tweeted which stated, “Active shooting in Canada, or as we call it in America, Wednesday.” Rosie O thought the tweet was “on point” but some people thought it was insensitive. Amy believed timing is everything and Chrissy’s point may have been missed because the people of Canada were still mourning and in shock. Nicolle said it is important to point out that this might have been an evil terrorist not just someone who was mentally ill. Rosie O said Chrissy was trying to make a statement about gun deaths in America.  She said 86 people a day are killed because of guns in America and that IS terrorism. Nicolle said there are two equally important conversations going on and we shouldn’t try to compare them to each other in order to prove which one is more horrific. Rosie O said the entire country of Canada is in mourning because of the people shot yesterday and in America, this happens on a daily basis and because of that, we don’t even pay attention anymore. Natasha agreed with Amy and said there’s a question of her timing and how and when to make your point. She said timing is everything.  She said the backlash Chrissy is facing may be partly due to the fact that she’s a model with these deep thoughts.   She said some things might be better off texted to a friend rather than posted publicly on Twitter.  Rosie O thinks mental illness will surely be at play in the shooting case but Nicolle said it’s also possible the shooter just wanted to join the Jihad. Amy pointed out that the shooter was raised well and had parents who were well regarded in the community.  Nicolle said Obama loathes war but  when you see evil like ISIS, taking the country to war was the right thing to do. Rosie O simply stated that she’s against war, against killing people and against violence. She said there has to be an alternate means of resolving conflict other than killing each other.
  • Hitler Creamer: Migros, a Swiss retailer, offered apologies Wednesday for their coffee creamers with pictures of Hitler on them.  Natasha’s grandparents were holocaust survivors and she wanted to make it clear that she knows, more than anyone, that Hitler is not a joke. But she was SHOCKED by the mistake and called it the “greatest news item she’s ever read.” She was also happy to hear the company has decided to take them off the market. Rosie pointed out that the retailer is no longer doing business with the label company. Nicolle believes an investigation is warranted for how the error occurred and Amy said she’d like to look into it!
  • Get Out and VOTE: Nicolle reminded viewers that early voting has started and every citizen has a vote to cast because every member of Congress is up for reelection. She said approval for Congress is at a measly 12% and no one likes them but then nobody votes! She discussed how politicians are having trouble even getting air time on today’s news and why that could be. Rosie O agreed. She said Obama can’t even get anyone’s attention in the media. Amy said perhaps it’s because people have so many options and ways to entertain themselves or perhaps it’s because people are so disaffected by politicians.  No one believes politicians can actually get anything done or make change happen and that makes it difficult for people to pay attention. Natasha said it’s not a good time to stay home from the polls this November because important issues, like reproductive rights, are on the table.
  • Viral Video: The ladies showed the video You Don’t Own Me which reminds women to participate in the political process and VOTE on November 4th. Nicolle said women are not simply a “voting block” that politicians need to pander to, they represent more than half the country. She said women are the majority of the people who vote and everyone should get out and vote; Democrat and Republican. She said when you look at the elections in the final days, it’s the women that often decide the outcome. Rosie O agreed and said at the Veteran of Feminists of America luncheon she went to the other day, voting was the biggest issue they discussed.
  • #TBT: As a throwback Thursday, they showed a clip from an old television game show called Crosswits featuring Rosie O’Donnell!  The Game Show Network will be airing the 1984 episode of the show this Sunday at 11pm!  They showed a clip from the show and Rosie couldn’t believe her hair or what she called her “weird speech impediment.”  She called it “scary and embarrassing.” Tune into the Game Show Network for that gem this Sunday!
  • Tweeting Larry King: Larry King, whom they all love and admire, is a frequent tweeter, even in the wee hours of morning.  Rosie recommends people turn off their phones after 11pm but in honor of Larry’s tweets, each host read several of the more humorous ones for the audience.  They ranged from his thoughts about the Zoo, finding pilots voices comforting, how he hates people with perfect teeth, how he misses his lunches with Joe Biden, etc. etc.  Rosie O said Twitter and the fact that celebrities have access to the public in this way is a publicist’s worst nightmare.
  • Dog Breed Predicts Life You’ll Have: Rosie O said a new study finds that the breed of dog you own predicts the kind of life you’re going to have.  Natasha and Amy both have a Maltipoo’sNicolle has a Vizsla named Lily.  And Rosie O has a Chihuahua and miniature Australian Shepherd who she called “very neurotic” and the “most needy dog” ever.   They also gave a shout-out to Rosie P’s dogs (who are sadly, no longer with us) a Sussex Spaniel and a mutt she loved.  They then discussed their love of Rosie Perez and how inspired they were after they read her book Handbook for an Unpredictable Life: How I Survived Sister Renata and My Crazy Mother, and Still Came Out Smiling (with Great Hair)Rosie O recommended everyone read her book and she said if you do, “you’ll want to hug her every day, for the rest of her life.”

Guests:

Tom Bergeron: Tom Bergeron joined the ladies of The View today to discuss his shows Dancing With the Stars and America’s Funniest Home Videos.  Tom discussed how this is his last season of AFHV.  He said it’s his 15th year on the show and he felt it was time to pass it along to another host.  However, his good friend William Shatner didn’t want him to step down!  Natasha asked Tom if it’s true he has an uncredited part in the movie Gremlins and he said it was not.  And as every View fan now knows, one of Nicolle‘s greatest fears are mimes and it turns out Tom used to be a mime!  He joked endlessly with Nicolle and even did some mime moves for her which really scared her!  She said she was sweating and shaking watching him mime!   Tom said the highlight of DWTS this year had to be when Alfonso did the Carlton on the show.  You can catch America’s Funniest Home Videos on Sundays at 7pm and Dancing With the Stars on Mondays at 8pm.

Little Big Town: The band Little Big Town joined the ladies of The View to discuss their new album Pain Killer.  The group discussed how they were recently inducted into the Grand Ole Opry and what an honor it was.  They discussed their new album, their recent appearance as coaches on The Voice, and what it’s like to be on tour with their children.  Lastly, they played a game with the ladies called “Sigourney Weaver.”  In the game you sing any song but you can only use the lyric “Sigourney Weaver.”  The group performed Day Drinking from their new album Pain Killer.

Quoteables:

Amy Robach: “People are so disaffected by politicians.  They don’t believe them, they don’t believe that they can create change so they don’t want to hear about them and they don’t want to vote.”

Nicolle:  “When you see evil like ISIS, taking the country to war is the right thing to do and I support President Obama.”

Rosie O: “Eighty-six people in America are killed every day with guns and that is terrorism here.”

Natasha Lyonne: [whether to tweet or not to tweet] “It’s the question of the inside thought in the modern age.  I have a lot of thoughts and I feel like that’s why I text.”

Tom Bergeron: [about America’s Funnies Home Videos] “It’s like a slap-stick buffet.”

Hot Topics:

  • About Last Night: The ladies started the show off discussing what they did yesterday after the show. Rosie O went to a luncheon at the Harvard Club in NYC for the Veteran Feminists of America, where she accepted the Inspiration Award. She sat with the fabulous Eve Ensler, Gloria Steinem, and Marlo Thomas! Rosie O spoke about how important being a feminist is to her and about the importance of the feminists who fought so that women could be treated equally. She said she is proud to be a feminist and thinks every woman should be a feminist because it’s just about being equal. Rosie P did nothing last night. She was supposed to see her nephew Josh, but he sent her an adorable little video explaining how he had diarrhea and couldn’t meet her! She said they have a standing date for ice-cream every week (even though she’s allergic to dairy, she cheats on her diet for him). Nicolle had a date night with her son which consisted of a little playground time and dinner. She said she went to bed early because she had double-duty today. She was on Morning Joe this morning before she came to The View set. Whoopi had no recollection of what she did last night! Lol She just remembered the really bad weather and the lightning from a storm that passed through. Nicolle quickly added that she finally caught up on The Voice and saw the Halo battle round. She predicted one of those two women were going to win the show.
  • Zellweger-Gate: People are losing their minds over Renee Zellweger looking different due to rumored plastic surgery. People are saying Renee no longer looks like herself. Nicolle read Renee’s response back to her critics which basically states she’s feeling “healthy,” “peaceful” and that people don’t know her now that she’s in her 40s. Rosie P said whether or not Renee got plastic surgery is not anyone’s business, it’s hers. She referred to plastic surgery as “the new mascara.” And she said it’s no different than doing anything else to enhance your looks, which we all do. She said it’s Renee’s right and people are way too mean and cruel to be criticizing her for it. Rosie O agreed that people shouldn’t be mean to her about it, but she asked, if someone drastically changes their appearance are people supposed to pretend like we don’t notice? She doesn’t believe in being mean and judgmental about it, but she thinks it’s okay to talk about it or it becomes like the “elephant in the room.” Whoopi said very few stars look like how they did when they first arrived. She said it’s part of the society we live in. In fact, a Saudi cleric recently spoke out against social media and Twitter calling it the root of all evil and devastation. Nicolle said the reality is, there is unending pressure on women to look young. She tried Botox once and thought it made her look like Inspector Clouseau.”  She said it made her look ridiculous, and she will never do it again. But at the same time, she agreed with Rosie O that we can’t pretend we don’t notice when someone changes drastically. Rosie O said that when she lost 50 pounds due to gastric sleeve surgery, people asked about it because it was really noticeable. Rosie P believes there’s a double-standard and that men do not receive the same criticism. Whoopi said maybe the Saudi cleric has a point and social media allows people to say things anonymously that they wouldn’t say in normal interaction with others. Nicolle agreed and called it a “mob mentality.” She said on the street you would stop that sort of bullying, but on Twitter everyone just piles on. But in the end, Nicolle said our desire for plastic surgery is because of the unending pressure women have to have “a body that looks like a 12 year old and a face that looks like an 8 year old.”
  • Chris Christie Doesn’t Want To Hear About Minimum Wage: Governor of New Jersey, Chris Christie, never one to shy away from issues, is tired of hearing about minimum wage. They played a video of Christie saying “I gotta tell you the truth: I’m tired of hearing about the minimum wage. I really am. I don’t think there’s a mother or father sitting around a kitchen table in America tonight who are saying, ‘You know, honey, if our son or daughter could just make a higher minimum wage, my God, all of our dreams would be realized.’” Rosie P said people who are making minimum wage are sick and tired of making it! And she said they are probably worried they are only making that amount too. Whoopi agreed. She said many are trying to support a family on minimum wage. She said “sorry you don’t want to hear about it” Chris Christie, but you’re the governor of New Jersey and you shouldn’t be sick of hearing about the problems of the people of that state! Rosie O said it takes a day and half for people making minimum wage just to make enough money to buy the gas in order to get to work, the minimum wage hasn’t been raised since 2009, and it’s about time to raise it. Nicolle pointed out that two-thirds of the people making minimum wage are women. She didn’t think the governor’s comments were smart for his presidential run because a president has to have “an infinite capacity to listen.” However, she knew what the governor was trying to say was that the minimum wage issue needs to be broader and addressed in conjunction with other issues like the lack of opportunities and issues of equality. She said raising the minimum wage alone “will not lift a family out of poverty.” The other ladies said if that’s what Christie was trying to say, then he should have said that. Nicolle also said if he’s going to run for president, he has to stop saying things like this. People are tired of politicians catering to people who are only doing well and if you want to run for president you have to run for everybody.
  • Goodbye to The Bridge: Rosie O was sad to report her favorite television show The Bridge was not renewed by FX for Season 3.  She called it “one of the best shows she’s ever seen in her life.”  She encouraged viewers to watch it on Netflix and pray Netflix picks it up.  Whoopi fell in love with the show too because Rosie told her about it!  And the ladies went to commercial break crying (jokingly) about the cancellation.
  • Must have Monday: Nicolle reminded the audience about The View’s “Must Have Mondays,” where they will be featuring fantastic gifts you’ll love to give at up to 80% off the retail price! Keep a lookout for that segment this coming Monday!
  • Viral Video: Obama still knows how to handle himself in an awkward moment at the polls yesterday.  At early voting yesterday a man walked by and said to him “Keep your hands off my girlfriend,” and the President retorted, “I wasn’t planning on it.” The ladies had a good laugh at the funny moment.  Nicolle said, “It’s precious and rare” to see a president “in a truly unscripted moment with a normal person.”  She said, “He was being himself” and she loved it.
  • Malala to Obama: Malala Yousafzai has asked Obama to Stop Arming the World. The Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai asked President Obama to send teachers to help terrorism instead of weapons at the Forbes under 30 Summit yesterday.   She said instead of sending guns, send books and instead of sending weapons, send teachers. Rosie P thought that was a wonderful thought but said there are crazy people in the world and sometimes “you gotta do what you gotta do.”  She also said that response wouldn’t have stopped Hitler.  Rosie P said she was “nerdy and nice” in school but after 4 girls jumped her, her “Brooklyn came out.” Nicolle reminded the audience that Obama also won the Nobel Peace Prize and is now involved in a war against violent terrorists. She believes we live in a world where you have to do both.   She also said she’s very comfortable with trying to annihilate the people who shot Malala in the head.  And Rosie O said, “Well, I’m not [okay with it] and I think we should follow her lead.” Rosie O believes only the light can end the darkness.  Whoopi thinks there’s nothing you can do when people hate and she is tired of it.  She understood Rosie P‘s point of view.  She said, “You come at me the wrong way and I’m gonna knock you out.”
  • Saying Goodbye: The world of journalism lost a giant yesterday.  The legendary Washington Post editor Ben Bradlee (1921-2014) passed away yesterday at 93 years old. The ladies discussed their mutual respect for him and the impact he made on the world of journalism. They also expressed their condolences to his friends and family.

Guests:

Ty Burrell: Actor Ty Burrell joined the ladies of The View to discuss his role as Phil Dunphy on the hit television show Modern Family. He discussed what it was like to receive his second Emmy and how he almost quit acting right before he landed his role on the show! Ty said he feels “crazy lucky” to be a part of the Modern Family cast. They talked about the upcoming Halloween episode and how his character Phil battles with his wife over not wanting Halloween to be so scary. He said the cast truly does all get along and they were all (pretty much) struggling actors before they landed the hit series. He said they’re all “constantly waiting to wake up from the dream.” They touched on Ty’s new roles in the movies The Skeleton Twins and the future film Finding Dory, which will be released in June of 2016. Modern Family airs tonight at 9pm on ABC! Don’t miss it!

Discreet Discussions Presented by Always: Rosie O and Marilu Henner sat down to continue their “discreet discussion” on things women talk about only with their girlfriends.  They discussed a multitude of topics including raising children, favorite movies, getting mammograms, and fighting the obesity epidemic in America.   Both Marilu and Rosie O think the instant gratification of today’s technology is ruining our ability to stay present in the moment. They talked about how people used to sit and talk in waiting rooms and how now everyone is plugged into their own devices. Rosie O discussed her heart attack, the 100% blockage of her LAD, and her struggles to lose weight. Marilu said our struggles to lose weight are because bad food has its own agenda. She said, “We are stuffing our faces but starving our bodies.” The conversation was brought to you by Always Discreet for sensitive bladders, which is perfect for your “discreet moments.”

The Wonder Years Now Available On DVD: Fred Savage and Danica McKellar, the stars of The Wonder Yearsjoined the ladies of The View.  Fred is currently directing and Danica is an author of the best selling books Math Doesn’t Suck.  They discussed their roles on the beloved television show of the 80s and 90s and announced it’s now available on DVD!

Audience Gift:  The entire audience went home with a copy of The Wonder Years on DVD!

Quote-ables:

Nicolle:
“There’s an unending pressure on women to look forever young.”
