In case you missed it, the panel started things off by sharing stories of what they did last night.

Whoopi was in a fantastic mood because she was out all night at a club seeing the band Vintage Trouble. She told everyone watching to check them out!

Rosie O.’s baby Dakota was up much of the night with night terrors. However, tonight she will be on the America’s Got Talent finale because her friend Howard Stern asked her to appear on the show to help him with a card trick. TUNE IN for THAT! Rosie said she hopes Quintavious Johnson wins but you’ll have to watch tonight to find out!

Rosie P. said she passed out last night from pure exhaustion and so did Nicolle. Although Nicolle did add that “every night is party night with a 2.5 year-old.” Ain’t that the truth!

Hot Topics

  • Isn’t it about the money? The panel discussed and debated whether the NFL is doing a major about-face over the Adrian Peterson drama merely because of pressure from their sponsors. The panel discussed the broader issue of child abuse and the surprising turn in the case now that sponsors are pulling out.  Nicolle wondered where all the policy makers are while this is being discussed and Rosie O. wondered if any of the corporation executives have ever been accused of child abuse and domestic violence.  She said it’s easy to point fingers at other people, but wondered who is looking at their criminal records.
  • Public shaming of four year old: Whoopi introduced the story about a father from Michigan who punished his 4-year-old son by making him hold a sign that said, “I hit girls.” Whoopi thought it was a great way for the child to learn his lesson but Nicolle thought it wasn’t right to shame a child in this manner. Whoopi, however, defended the action saying that sometimes parents need to take these sorts of measures in order to get control of their children.  Rosie P. thought 4 years old was way too young to be shaming a child in this way. She thought it was too extreme.  Rosie O. said no matter what, shame is never the way to teach a child anything and said a 4-year-old is not emotionally ready to absorb that lesson. Her own son Blake couldn’t speak when he was that age so he would hit out of frustration. He hadn’t yet been diagnosed with the learning disability Auditory Processing Disorder. However she said Blake is now in high school and doing great. Whoopi agreed to disagree and they moved on.
  • Rosie O. interviewed her biggest idol and inspiration Barbra Streisand last week and that interview will air on tomorrow (9/18) on the show!  You’re not going to want to miss it!  She said she also ran into Robert Redford at the hotel where Babs was doing a press junket for her new CD Partners.  Rosie then showed the scrapbook she made with every note Barbra has ever written to her, exclaiming, “OCD, who’s to say?!” She also shared a note from her sister-friend Whoopi. She said that Whoopi has always been one of her biggest supporters and she thanked her for that.   Barbra-Streisand-and-Rosie-ODonnell
  • Selfie Culture Out of Control?  CNN is reporting that while Joan Rivers was under anesthesia, her schmuck doctor took a selfie with her just before she went into cardiac arrest. Nicolle wondered if all famous people worry things like that will happen to them when they go to the doctor, even say, the gynecologist?! Whoopi said she has an iPhone “in there” and she’s taking their picture! HA!

Viral Videos:

First there was the video of a Japanese flautist at an international competition who doesn’t miss a beat under pressure as a butterfly lands on her face while she was performing. Rosie O. said her baby girl is obsessed with butterflies and they showed another absolutely adorable video where a butterfly lands on a little boy’s face.

Guests:

Actor and Tony Award winner Neil Patrick Harris stopped by the studio to promote his latest movie Gone Girl (though they barely talked about it so you can watch the trailer here). NPH dished about his experience starring in Hedwig and the Angry Inch, which he loved doing because it allowed him to act completely different than he is in real life and in such an extreme way.  He said he was nervous at first to take on the character because he wanted to make sure he did it justice, but he’s so glad he did because he felt like the performance really moved people and changed some hearts and minds along the way.  Annnnd, it wasn’t bad winning a Tony for the performance either!  BTW, if you haven’t SEEN his performance from this year’s Tony’s YOU MUST WATCH IT.   Whoopi gave NPH some wicked cool platform shoes and he loved them. Neil talked about his recent wedding to David Burtka and his two utterly, adorable children. He is also helping to promote a competition initiated by LG called the The Art of the Pixel competition in which art students from schools around America submit their art on new technologies.  Neil said he’s a collector and lover of art so he thought it was a great way to get involved while raising money and awareness for the arts.  Neil promised to come back to the show after his autobiography comes out October 14th!

Next up was one the biggest country stars on the planet, Tim McGraw who sat with Whoopi and Rosie P. to talk about his brand new CD Sundown Heaven TownRosie P. asked Tim if it was true that he proposed to Faith Hill in a trailer? Tim said it was! He said he wrote on the mirror “Will you marry me?” Then he went on stage and returned to read her answer, which was “I’m going to be your wife. Yes.” and they still have that mirror to this day.  Whoopi asked Tim what the secret was to a good marriage and he said you must compromise and to never make assumptions.  Rosie P. said she has listened to his whole CD and she loves the new single, the duet with his wife Faith, Meanwhile Back at Mama’s.  You can purchase Tim McGraw’s newest CD Sundown Heaven Town, with the new hit single Meanwhile Back at Mama’s featuring Faith Hill, on iTunes here.

Tim sang Meanwhile Back at Mama’s for the studio audience and viewers at home.

Audience Gift:  Everyone got a copy of his Tim McGraw’s CD Sundown Heaven Town!

In case you missed it, after a brief discussion about why Whoopi was late to the show today because of getting stuck in NYC traffic due to the rainy weather, the ladies got right down to business!

 Hot Topics:

  • Is President Obama a narcissist? Former psychiatrist and conservative columnist Charles Krauthammer (A god in Nicolle’s world. A “god.” She said it twice.) has claimed that President Obama is a narcissist. Nicolle wholeheartedly agreed with that diagnosis. Nicolle also believes Obama’s narcissism explains his inability to develop relationships with Congress. Rosie P. disagreed, pointing out how personable President Obama is. Nicolle said Obama, and narcissists in general, have an inflated sense of themselves and their own importance and a deep need for admiration. Rosie O. said that’s literally a description of every celebrity she knows, including herself!  Nicolle pointed out that Joe Biden has much more productive relationships in politics and Rosie wondered if perhaps the reason Joe has such an easier time with members of Congress was partly due to the fact that he’s not the President of the United States.  Rosie O. said, “Let me just ask you something, when Kanye West says ‘I don’t think President Bush cares about black people,’ it’s like an international incident, but you can say that you don’t think Obama likes people?”  After Rosie O. questioned Nicolle on Bush’s ability to connect with the citizens of New Orleans as he was flying over the city post-Katrina in a plane looking down from the sky, the segment ended with Nicolle defending Bush’s record on rebuilding the battered city.
  • Chris Judd on Marriage to JLo “You’re No Longer a Normal Person.” Chris Judd, JLo’s ex, was reported in Us Weekly saying that when you are famous you can no longer be a normal person. Everyone on the panel agreed that no matter how much you warn others about how fame follows you everywhere, the constant attention can be an eye-opener if you’re not used to it. Rosie P. said when the news broke that she was chosen as a host of The View, she tried to go to Costco, one of her favorite places, and everyone started recording her with their cell phones.  She had to have a conversation with her family and friends about how things were going to change now that she’s joining the show.
  • The Mother of James Foley, the American journalist beheaded by ISIS militants, is now saying that the government did not do enough to save her son.  Rosie O. was moved by his mother’s words, “He would never want us to hate or be bitter.” She thought that kind of grace doesn’t exist very much in today’s world. Nicolle said this grace only came after 20 months in captivity and she also said it was illegal for his parents to raise money to try and get him released. Whoopi pointed out that when ransoms are paid to terrorists it actually funds terrorism.
  • Robin Thicke says when he wrote Blurred Lines he was high on Vicodin and booze and he’s claiming Pharell Williams wrote every single part of the song. The admission is part of a lawsuit deposition connected with the smash hit. Thicke is currently being sued by the family of the late Marvin Gaye, who claims Blurred Lines is very similar to the 1977 hit song Got to Give it Up.
  • Alfonso Ribeiro is Killing It on DWTS: Some are saying the former “Fresh Prince of Bel Air” star is a ringer to win Dancing With the Stars.  Rosie P. talked about her absolute love of dance shows.  The panel questioned reality television and what happens to the dancers-turned-stars once their 8 week stint on the show is over.  Rosie O. said her time on Star Search did the same for her and she was booking clubs before she even had an act!
  • Toronto Mayor Rob Ford is stepping down because of an abdominal tumor. Nicolle, who was a big fan of the Mayor, said she had a dream that he had died even before his health issue was announced.  She then added that she has “never known a person who does crack who is so fat.”  Whoopi is also a big fan of the Mayor and thought if he could do his job effectively while high, that is quite an accomplishment!
  • Colombian Women’s Cycling Team’s “Naked” Uniforms: The total consensus on the panel was that that the team’s “kits” as they are called, are WAY too outrageous.

Guests:

Kirsten Dunst joined the show to promote her latest movie The Two Faces of January.  She briefly mentioned her mother who battled breast cancer 2 years ago but who is totally recovered today. And she bonded with Whoopi over their mutual adoration of cats, and then they laughed together over a video of a cat scratching his butt. What’s next for Kirsten? She said she just finished working on a movie entitled Midnight Special directed by Jeff Nichols, the director of Mud.

Rachael Ray who just kicked off her 9th Season of The Rachael Ray Show joined the panel with snacks for everyone, of course! She came to share her goal this year which is to feed 9 million Americans 9 million meals! Rachael also mentioned that this weekend is the grand finale of her show Kids Cook-Off on The Food Network.  The panel discussed hunger, nutrition, preventing obesity, exercise and the improvements they’re trying to make to lunches in the public school system.  Rachael was Skyping earlier this morning with the White House because she was named to the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition where they were discussing these very issues.

Audience Gift:

Everyone in the audience received Rachael Ray food transport totes!

Quote-ables:

Whoopi:  “We’re proud to say our who-haas are right where they need to be.”

Rosie O: “Note to self: if you are a constant crack smoker, you are not fat.”

Rosie P.: To her family on being named to The View: “Things are going to change.”

Nicolle:  “I just think he’s [Rob Ford] awesome. If you are the Mayor, if you run anything and you are that crazy, I am rooting for you.”

Today The View introduced its new logo, new set, new opening song and, of course, three new hosts – Rosie O’Donnell, Rosie Perez, and Nicolle Wallace and welcomed back  Whoopi Goldberg as moderator.  The premiere of the 18th Season began with the hosts paying tribute to the queen, the show’s original co-executive producer, Barbara Walters.  Barbara sat on her throne off-stage (literally, she sat on a throne) as each host kissed her ring before they went on set.  At the end of the bit she joked she was promised a crown, an off-camera hand suddenly supplied her one, she put it on and introduced the show.

Getting to know you!

Rosie O. mentioned her new marriage and new baby, Dakota.  She said her eldest son Parker started college this fall and she touched briefly on her recent heart attack and her 50 lb. weight loss that she attributed to gastric sleeve surgery.

Rosie Perez mentioned that she will soon be co-starring on Broadway in Larry David’s play “Fish In the Dark.” She also has a new memoir out and was recently married to contemporary artist, Eric Hayes.

Nicolle Wallace, who admitted she only found out about 10 days ago that she was chosen as a fellow host of The View, confessed proudly that she’s the sole Republican on the panel.  Her experience includes serving as communications chief for the George Bush White House and working on the 2008 campaign trail with John McCain and Sarah Palin. Since then Nicolle said she’s been busy writing novels, working on Morning Joe on MSNBC, and raising her two-year-old son.

Whoopi Goldberg, who has returned to the show as moderator, said since the show was last on air she’s lost a little weight and has been spending a lot of time with her great-granddaughter, Charlie Rose.  And of course, she was carrying on The View tradition of rockin her crazy shoes.  Take a look back at some of Whoopi’s insane shoe collection from show’s past!

  • Ray Rice and domestic violence: The panelists discussed recent headlines of domestic violence surrounding NFL players, and more specifically, Ray Rice’s indefinite suspension from the NFL for domestic abuse and his plans to appeal.  The ladies talked about how the release of the TMZ video reignited the case as well as the discussion about domestic violence and violence in professional sports.  Rosie P., a huge professional boxing fan, briefly discussed Floyd Mayweather, Jr.’s history with domestic violence and the panel weighed in on the recent allegations of child abuse against football star, Adrian Peterson.  This in turn sparked a debate over the difference between abuse and discipline.
  • New stars in the sky: The panel briefly touched on the stars that we’ve lost this year including Robin Williams and Joan Rivers.  When Robin was mentioned Rosie O. touched on her own battle with depression and how she hopes these discussions will help to de-stigmatize mental illness in this country.
  • Will Hillary Clinton run? Nicolle said she had absolutely no doubt that she is indeed running for office.

Icebreaker games:

Ro or Ro? An audience member was told a quote or tidbit and had to guess which Ro owned it. Despite the fact that she got almost every question wrong, she still won a Huawei smartphone and so did the entire studio audience!

Ask me Anything: Nicolle fielded questions from the panel.  When asked what was one of her biggest struggles she ever had while working at the White House Nicolle referred to Dick Cheney’s hunting accident and the challenges that went along with breaking that news to the White House Press Corps.  Rosie P. asked Nicolle about her tumultuous relationship with Sarah Palin during the 2008 presidential campaign.  Nicolle said her working relationship with Sarah was irreparably damaged after the now infamous Katie Couric interview.  In the end, Nicolle said Sarah blamed her for the bad interview and setting her up to fail.

Lastly, Tony Award winner Kristen Chenoweth sang Borrowed Angels in honor of Joan Rivers who had been a guest of the show 34 times!  The panel ended the show fighting back tears and remembering the legendary comedienne.
